Mastercard Inc and Visa Inc on Thursday stopped processing payments on Pornhub after an article in The New York Times said many videos posted on the adult website depicted sexual assault of children.
Mastercard said it was permanently ending the use of its cards on the sex video site after its investigation confirmed the presence of illegal content
“Our investigation over the past several days has confirmed violations of our standards prohibiting unlawful content on their site,” Mastercard said in a statement on Thursday. “We instructed the financial institutions that connect the site to our network to terminate acceptance.” on the platform.
Mastercard said it is continuing to investigate potential illegal content on other websites. Pornography sites have long faced difficulty accepting electronic payments, and sex workers have claimed they have had their bank accounts shut down after lenders learned of their profession.
Visa said it was suspending payments till an investigation was completed.
