Zimbabwe Army To Eye Social Media

According to the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) commander Edzai Chimonyo, the army will soon embark on a monitoring the citizens’ private communication, this poses questions on how they will actually do this. Well, this is not really as you would think as social platforms such as WhatsApp are protected by Enryption, (this is the process of encoding a message or information in such a way that only authorized parties can access it and those who are not authorized cannot). This will only leave them with the option of monitoring our groups and other similar platforms, that is if they get access of course.

Edzai Chimonyo explained,

Social media was now a security threat which the uniformed forces should closely monitor. As commander of the Zimbabwe National Army, I am happy that the course laid a proper foundation in the areas of cyber security, which pose a dangerous threat to our national security. Social media poses a dangerous threat to our national security. Social media is one of the tools that is being used for misinformation and I believe that your training has been an eye opener to the rigours and realities of technological advancements.

With the Cyber Crime and Data Protection Bill still in progress, there is need to make sure that this move is cautiously executed. The Ministry of ICT is making an effort to make sure that this law comes into effect.

This initiative comes as an alarm after social media has since become a threat to the government as it has since been used to stage protest and similar events.
